Helping your children eat well

Do you remember when you were a child and your parents told you, “Eat your fruits and veggies, they’re good for you!”  Well, as a parent now, you know they were right! Eating healthy helps your children grow and develop, but did you know that eating healthy can also help reduce their risk of developing other diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer later in life?

Why is eating healthy important for your children?

Eating well and being active every day helps your children maintain a healthy weight.

In Canada, obesity among children and teens is increasing even faster than in adults. Sadly, health problems related to being overweight are now happening at a much earlier age, and obesity has been linked to the possibility of some diseases developing later in life.

Healthy eating is especially important for children to make sure they get all the nutrients they need to grow. And helping your children eat healthy now will make them more likely to eat healthy as they get older.

What you can do

Eating healthy is one of the most important ways your children can achieve or maintain a healthy weight. Find out how you can take action to help your family eat well with these quick and simple tips.

Healthy Snack Ideas

Healthy Snack Ideas

  • Provide a variety of healthy snacks, such as cut up fruit and veggies or whole grain crackers with cheese.
  • Offer a few bite-sized snacks - you don’t want to ruin their next meal.
  • Prepare veggies - take the time to wash, peel and cut your veggies all at one time so they’re ready to pull out of the fridge when your children are hungry. If veggies are ready to eat, your children are less likely to reach for the junk food.

  • Think about non-food treats such as: Halloween pencils, stickers, erasers or temporary tattoos. Children often enjoy these just as much as candies.
  • If you prefer to hand out candy bars, get the smaller fun sized ones. And give one or two instead of  a handful to your trick-or-treaters.
