It’s that time of year again! Kids are heading back to school! Starting the the day with a balanced breakfast can help to fuel your children with the energy they need to stay focussed at school.   A balanced breakfast includes foods from at least three of the four food groups in Canada’s food Guide.

Granola and fresh fruit

This simple and nutritious back to school breakfast can help you start their day off right! It tastes great and is quick to make. Your children will love it! It’s as easy as combining low fat yogurt with granola and topping it with fresh fruit. You can also try substituting the granola with uncooked steel cut oats. Leave the mixture in the fridge overnight and it will be ready to serve in the morning. When you wake up your family’s taste buds will be screaming for this healthy treat!

How to get your children to eat breakfast

Struggling to get your children to sit down for breakfast before heading off to school? Here are some tips to help get your children excited about breakfast:

  • Have them help prepare breakfast for the whole family – your kids will love the opportunity to do something for you. Start off simple and get more advanced as they learn their way through the kitchen.
  • use fun plates and cups to get them excited about their food
  • use a cookie cutter to create fun shapes with their food (works really well with sandwiches)
  • Make sure to eat breakfast yourself – modelling healthy eating habits will help children adopt healthy behaviours in their adult lives.
