These days, there are few foods you can’t find in a supermarket year round, but nothing compares to the taste of fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables that are in full season. Summer is a great time of year to stock your fridge with a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables that your children will enjoy.

What is currently in season:

Let your children get messy with these juicy fruits and vegetables that are currently in full season and bursting with flavour: Apricots, blueberries, grapes, peaches, pears, plums, raspberries, tomatoes, beans, corn, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes and zucchini.

Why buy locally produced fruits and vegetables:

  • Fruits and vegetables that have been picked in their peak season taste better than fruits and vegetables picked before they have had a chance to ripen and develop flavour.
  • It’s the healthy choice. Freshly picked produce is full of nutrients and phytochemicals known to prevent disease
  • Fruits and vegetables are more affordable when they are in peak season
  • They are nature’s fast food! You can just grab and go.
  • It’s good for the environment as it cuts down on carbon emissions resulting from food travelling and being transported long distances
  • In support of local farmers within your community or region.

How can you enjoy seasonal food all year round?

Enjoying seasonal food all year round is easy by freezing or canning your fruits and vegetables when they are at their peak freshness. It retains nutrient value and prolongs goodness.

Finding local in season foods may seem like a challenge especially when you are facing increasing demands on your time. Here are some easy tips to help you find fresh local produce for your family.

  • Read the labels and signage posted in the grocery store – compare products and choose locally produced products first
  • Shop at local farmers markets.
  • Pick your own – a trip your family is sure to enjoy and a great way to teach your children about where their food is grown.

Remember a colourful plate is a healthy plate!
