Bisphenol A, also called BPA, has been in the news for several years with many claims and counter claims.

BPA is a chemical that is found in certain types of very hard, clear plastics, such as reusable water bottles, plastic toys, food containers and children’s sippy cups. BPA can also be found as a liner in some metal food cans and in some dental material.

Why is bisphenol A an issue for your children?

Some research suggests that BPA may be an endocrine disruptor, which can lead to certain types of cancer. However, scientists disagree about the results of these studies and what the studies mean for humans.

Because of the media stories about BPA, parents are wondering if they should keep using products that contain this substance. Governments and organizations are continuing to monitor research about whether exposure to bisphenol A can be a cancer risk. So far, the research is not clear but if you are concerned and want to avoid BPA, there are steps you can take.

What you can do

In Canada, it is now illegal to import or sell baby bottles containing BPA. However, the substance is used in many consumer products including pop cans, canned food, hard plastic food and water containers. It is also used in some children’s toys.
